Korean Movie Night: Battleship Island 군함도 (2017) Korean

Hwang Jung Min, So Ji Sub, Song Joong Ki, Lee Jung Hyun, Kim Su An

Movie rating: 7/10     Neck score: A+

This was definitely set up as a wartime/survival/underdog movie.  We have a bunch of Koreans forced into a labor camp on a coal island off of Nagasaki.  Tricked and then forced into slave labor.  So naturally, since this is a WWII movie, the Japanese are going to be super demonized.  Just letting you know.  They're basically the worst in this.  Not just kicking the puppies, they're outright killing the puppies.  The other worst is that it's a fight to survive in this camp, so Koreans are turning on Koreans, especially the ones who kiss up to the Japanese to get favorable treatment.

So we're following a musician (Hwang Jung Min) and his band, and his daughter (Kim Su Ah), who get forced into going, along with a boatload of "drafted soldiers" and a bunch of women who were brought to "help".  They're just trying to survive, but even with their letter of recommendation, they are forced into the camp.  So Ji Sub is one of the drafted.  He's a gangster with authority issues.  He starts a fight on the boat over, and has an awesome run in with Lee Jung Hyun who is basically boss and can hold her own, which is great because she can help protect the daughter, who's like 10, but is still separated out with all the women.  They all get forced into the coal mine labor camp, forced slavery or indenture, since they force them into debt along with everything else they do to them.  Once in the camp, it's basically just survival.

It's funny because this one was a lot more action packed, but because of that it felt less harsh than the brutality that was in A Taxi Driver.  There was plenty of violence and fighting, but it was the kind we were used to?  Not all of it, just in general.  There was still plenty of shuddery violent scenes, and anxious ones, such as the bathhouse fight, which was awesome as it was scary because fighting almost naked in a bathhouse, so in and out of the bathtubs.  But that was the way to do a bathhouse fight (cough cough The K2 cough cough).  As they were coal mining all the time, there was plenty of almost naked men, which could go both ways depending on who the man was.

I always felt the most anxious for the daughter the whole time, because she was just a kid and had to face some pretty nasty stuff, but that's the reality of that time, so they weren't pulling too many punches.  It's a good thing that she was super smart along with everyone else, or there is no knowing what could have happened.  Shudder.  It was a little bit like Life is Beautiful, the Italian Holocaust movie, if you've seen that, but much more action packed and a whole lot less tear jerking, which is not to say that it isn't tear jerking, because it's a Korean movie, but nothing makes me cry like Life is Beautiful.

I kind of like how ambiguous Song Joong Ki's character is.  I'll just leave it at that.  He's special forces, but what is his mission?  Duh duh duhhhhhhh.  That's one of the things I liked about everyone.  They're all on their own side, which might be the same side, if they could figure it out, but the number one objective for everyone is survival, and then they have to figure out how and with whom, etc.  I liked it a lot.  I probably liked A Taxi Driver more, because it was more sentimental, but I did like both.  I'd recommend it just for that cool three screen deal.  I'm not a fan of 3D, so this was a much cooler alternative for me.  I felt very surrounded, which was awesome in those mine scenes.

Day Two: First Official Day of K-Con LA 2017

So starts day two of our K-Con adventure, this one is focused on exploring, since we had some flexibility.  It started later, so we got there later, and miraculously missed all the traffic.  Our hotel was farther from the convention center, but still situated so that we would miss the bad traffic if we left at the right time.

No one died while I drove in LA.  In fact, I was once again pleasantly surprised at how decently everyone was driving, not that I loved the traffic, it was just more predictable than freeway traffic where I'm from.  People know how to merge a bit better, haha.

195. Descendants of the Sun 태양의 후예 (2016) Korean

Song Joong Ki, Song Hye Kyo, Kim Ji Won, Jin Goo

Drama Rating: 7/10     Neck Score: A+

Was it over-hyped?  Yes.  Was it still worth it?  Yes.  It wasn't brilliantly written by any means, but it did bring out the feels.  It was also probably one of the best romances and definitely the best bromances by this writer.  The Song couple had plenty chemistry.  I liked their feisty bantering and teasing.  I did think that her worries dragged on a little too much, even if they were understandable, but at least the show never did get to the point where I hated it ever.  That one episode was really boring... you know, episode 15, but it still had enough good parts to make it not worthless.  Maybe because all the actors were good enough to make the cheesy lines they pulled less sucky.  I liked all the relationships too.  I think the bromance held it together the most, but then all the other romantic relationships were great too.  The army couple, Seo and Yoon were maybe more compelling for me because they were more angsty while the Song couple was more sexy.  But my personal OTP was the doctor-nurse couple.  I heart them the most.  Now to talk about the ending... o-mo.  It was so cheesy that I thought I was going to die laughing.  It almost ruined it for me, because... yeah.  And it was completely pre-produced and it still had a lame ending?  What the heck!?!  I liked everything else about pre-production, though.  Good times.  But the show was if not well written, completely enjoyable to watch.  It was certainly super over dramatic at times.  I mean, right when something gets fixed then something else dramatic happens.  Natural disasters, secret black ops missions, etc.  It was very dramatic.  But at least it was rarely boring and, while ridiculous, you felt the feels.  So I liked it.  Plenty of beautiful "pigeons" to look at.  Mmmmm.

76. The Innocent Man 세상 어디에도 없는 착한 남자 (2012) Korean

Song Joong Ki, Moon Chae Won, Park Si Yeon, Lee Kwang Soo

Drama Rating: 7/10     Neck Score: A

This is a heavy show.  Lots of hard things, but also lots of great actors and eye candy.  Song Joong Ki never ceases to amaze me, and neither does Moon Chae Won.  But seriously, this show is about a bunch of not nice people.  The point is that there is no such thing as a nice guy/innocent man.  Kang Ma Ru (Song Joong Ki) goes to prison for six years to cover up the manslaughter of his girlfriend Han Jae Jee (Park Si Yeon), only to get out and find that she's married a rich older man and had his child.  So, after becoming a bartender and gigolo, he decides to get revenge by seducing the older man's daughter Seo Eun Ji (Moon Chae Won).  Things of course get super messy.  Even with the whole brain surgery and memory loss type deals that get thrown in, this show is super well done.  Like I said, Moon Chae Won is on of my favorite actresses, and she is super great in this one.  However, its a very heavy drama and hard to watch because of the themes and all the depressing type things that are happening.  In fact the only bright spot of the show most of the time is Lee Kwang Soo, who plays Kang Ma Ru's best friend, and Lee Yu Bi, Ma Ru's little sister, who are probably the funniest part of the whole show.  But I think the show ended fairly well for how messed up everything gets, and it gets pretty messed up.  Still, it is a very good show, well written and executed.  Basically all these actors are pretty amazing.  Especially Song Joong Ki.

38. Sungkyunkwan Scandal 성균관 스캔들 (2010) Korean

Park Yoochun, Park Min Young, Yoo Ah In, Song Joong Ki

Drama Rating: 7/10     Neck Score: A

It's the classic girl dresses as a dude, only it's also a sageuk (historical).  Only the themes of the show are so not traditional that it would have to be called more of a fusion sageuk.  Still it's fun, and it has three really handsome mens in it.  Personally, I fell in love with Song Joong Ki the most (which is totally understandable because he is awesome) but you really just have to love them all.  This was Yoochun's first real acting role (because those DBSK drama specials def totes don't count) and he does a really, really good job.  Also, JYJ all chipped in and did some OST for it, so we get to see Yoochun's face and hear Jaejoong and Junsu's beautiful voices.  Win and WIN!  We've got the main plot of her being a girl dressed as a boy and then forced into taking the entrance exams for Sungkyunkwan, which is basically the royal scholar academy (totally getting in obviously) and having to deal with the peeps who don't like her and are trying to kick her out, and then we have this other mystery plot involving the king and politics (because every sageuk needs that requirement), and then we have the love story that is entangled with everything else. Cheesy, but fun.  Easy on the eyes and as typical sageuks go, very undramatic, which is good.  Also we have a sort of cameo appearance of little Lee Min Ho (not the BOF star) who you might recognize as one of the ducklings in Rooftop Prince, one of Yoochun's later dramas.  Sweet deal.  Lots of moralizing too.  Honestly, the very ending is the worst part in terms of cheese, but in general it's an enjoyable show.
