Gong Yoo, Ma Dong Seok, Jung Yu Mi, Kim Su An, Kim Eui Sung, Choi Woo Shik, Ahn So Hee
Movie rating: 8/10 Neck score: A
I watched this one a while ago with my older sister and her husband. He is a filmmaker and a zombie enthusiast, so I had to. He actually bought it and watched it before I could even set up the movie night. He loved it, so some of his opinions will be shared here as well.
This is one of the most heart filled zombie movies I have seen (I haven't seen that many, but my brother-in-law has, and he said the same thing). While being gross and violent as all zombie movies must be, it isn't gratuitous violence, it is more about the story and the horror. And it's plenty intense, because we have little kids and pregnant ladies in the mix, and you just can't help but be more worried about them. Plus we have the claustrophobic terror of being in the confined space of the train.
The zombies themselves were very interesting, a good mix of body acting, gross make up, and probably some CGI. But they were really good. The contortion plus the movements was different and great. It made it super weird, creepy, and just cool.
One thing that my brother-in-law really liked was the depth to all the characters. While we had the classic horror film collection of characters, they each had their own depth and were humanized so that we felt things for all of them, even that rich selfish jerk. We got to see their growth, such as Gong Yoo's character going from worst dad to best dad, or Choi Woo Shik who was too cool/awkward to admit he likes the girl, to becoming a hero to protect her. Or "dad of the year" Teddy Bear Ma Dong Seok. He was the best. Just the very, very best.
Naturally the whole theme was about being united and helping each other and sacrifice. The only people who survived were ones protected by sacrifice and love. I would say it was intense over scary, and full of love and emotions. It also touched on responsibility, and the bitterness of selfishness.
The campiest part was the deer at the beginning.

234. Discovery of Romance 연애의 발견 (2014) Korean
Jung Yu Mi, Eric Mun, Sung Joon, Yoon Jin Yi, Yoon Hyun Min, Kim Seul Gi
Drama Rating: 6/10 Neck Score: B
I guess you can't technically say it belongs to the same franchise as "I Need Romance" since it isn't the same network, but it is the same writer, so it definitely has the same flavor. But it was also different enough to be not completely associated with it. Lizabreff still likes to say that it is the best of the "I Need Romances" but I might rank it on the same level as I Need Romance 3. I do like how it has the interview style, where all of the characters are interviewed to show their inner thoughts. I thought this was cleverly done, as it allowed for the differences in opinions and memories, because half of this show was about the past and what happened during the five years that the main couple dated and how they fell apart and why. It shows how people have different perceptions of what happened, remember things differently, and nothing is 100% someone's fault. I liked how the story built from the memories, to make us see that neither one of them was innocent and they both did plenty of stupid things while they were younger and more immature. It also showed how their relationship had affected each of them in positive and negative ways. She had become more confident in herself, but had also become manipulative. He had become more stubborn, but also more aware. This also left room for plenty of development for their characters which was also nice. However, in true "Romance" form, the show was dragged out so that the couple would not get together until the last episode, because these shows are about messy, messy relationships where all the ugly comes out before we finally see them get to where they are supposed to be, in the last episode. This meant frustration as the main love triangle dragged out for forever, even though we knew that Dr. Derpface and her romance was kind of toxic, as she manipulated him and he let her. We also just really wanted him to be with the other girl. Thank goodness we had the other couple, Fish Bangs and Seul Gi to make everything better. They were probably the cutest ever. I love both of them, so that could only be good things, and it was. They were hilarious and adorable. So yeah, good show, if you want a messy, frustrating, but growing and developing love triangle.

194. I Need Romance 2012 로맨스가 필요해 2012 (2012) Korean
Jung Yu Mi, Lee Jin Wook, Kim Ji Suk, Kim Ji Woo, Kang Ye Sol
Drama Rating: 4/10 Neck Score: A
Also known as I Need Nasty 2, this one was every bit as bad as the first one, except I actually liked both male actors okay, because neither one was Yul (Yuuuuuuuuuuuuul! <hiss hiss>). The problem was that it was just as frustratingly as predictable. Basically it's a show full of idiots and sexy time. The end. At least in this one her dumbo boyfriend didn't ever cheat on her but instead just lied to everyone, including himself, for the entire show, unless it was too late and then he tried and failed, and then there was a magic year gap that somehow made everything better. Yeah right. The main girl once again comes full circle and ends up right where she started, we hope this time wiser maybe. But we're not holding our breath for fear of passing out.
Here is the list of the couples in the order I cared about them:
1. Awkward Couple- Woo Ji Hee (Kang Ye Sol) and Kim Tae Woo (Heo Tae Hee). I wish this couple had gotten more screen time. They were awkward and adorable. But they almost magically got together because that's how little time we actually saw them. Sad.
2. Married Girl and Stupid Oppa- Sun Jae Kyung (Kim Ji Woo) and Han Jung Min (In Gyo Jin). This couple was so fussy and sensitive. But at least we saw them trying to work things out. They were more frustrating but at least I had hope for a reasonable reconciliation. PS, the only reason he is known as Stupid Oppa is because of Birth of a Beauty.
3. Kim Ji Suk and the Ginkgo Tree- yes, this relationship counts for more than most. As a kid, his character took care of a ginkgo tree because he was lonely. He watered it everyday too. Cute. Then he gets a baby gingko tree that is supposed to represent his relationship with the main girl, but I cared more about him longingly looking at it every time they were broken up or had a fight than the fact that they were broken up or had a fight.
4. The Main Love Triangle Crap- Tsunami (Jung Yu Mi), Dumbo (Lee Jin Wook), and Mr. Perfect (Kim Ji Suk). We've got a messy, messy love triangle that is full of lies and too much past. Just too messy to actually care about. Tsunami Yeol Mae (Jung Yu Mi) is smothering and selfish, but I loved how she was honest and tried. But Dumbo- aka Seok Hyun (Lee Jin Wook) on the other hand is cryptic, slithery-outy, and lies to everyone including himself. There are obviously reasons he keeps lying to keep them from being together, but we honestly just don't care. Then there is Shin Ji Hoon (Kim Ji Suk) who is like the perfect nice guy, if not a bit too aegyo. Nice guys don't win in this shows (not yet) and so while we love how cute he is, we know he doesn't really have a chance. Especially when the break up is based on frustrating lies and he is literally too nice for her.
So the show had lots of sexy time, even more frustrating lying and fighting, etc., and the longest, boringest drawn out ending ever. Well... what did I expect? It was I Need Nasty 2. Blech... but also yes, cuz hot men and relatably flawed bitca women. This one is a step up from the first, but not as good as the 3rd, from what I hear.
