We watched this one because besides being famous, it was the week of Halloween and we wanted to watch a scary movie... this movie is not scary. I would not count it as horror, more of just a monster movie- a baby on the scale of Gojira (Godzilla), but the same kind. In fact, when I found out that it was based on a real life event, when a Korean mortician working for the U.S. military dumped a bunch of formaldehyde down the drain and substantially into the Han River. This turns it, like Gojira , into an anti-American film, as it focuses more on the effects of American involvement and attitude. It is a political statement, not a horror movie. I would even say that the real monsters in the movie are not the actual monster, but the U.S. Military and how they handled the situation. The fact that they spread a mass virus hysteria because one of their soldiers died fighting the monster, while off duty, and that they would willfully turn Korean citizens into lab rats to cover their tracks just reinforces the theory. Then there is the obvious stab with the thinly veiled reference to Agent Orange, renamed Agent Yellow, as the bio weapon used to combat the creature.
The monster itself is just not scary because this movie is old and I was super underwhelmed at the CGI. It was meant to look like a giant mutated salamander or some other kind of amphibian, and it actually made me giggle when it first came out and went on a rampage. But this was 2006, so try not to judge it too harshly. I feel like the CGI budget was used up on the scenes where the monster would swing on the bridges in the sewers to travel, and climb up the the walls down to the pit where it would spit out it's victims. It had moments of coolness, but was still an early example of CGI monsters at best... or maybe worst.

133. Couple or Trouble 환상의 커플 (2006) Korean
Han Ye Seul, Oh Ji Ho, Kim Sung Min, Park Han Byul
Drama Rating: 6/10 Neck Score: B
Not the Hong Sisters' best drama, but a million times better than the movie it was based on (Overboard, 1987, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell). But can I just say Oh Ji Ho's arms. Mmmmm! He spent half the show in sleeveless shirts and it was wonderful. So it's a jerk rich girl falling overboard and getting amnesia, and this poor handyman dude deciding to get revenge on her by saying they were dating and making her do housework at his place until he gets his money's worth. The best part about it was all the side characters. The three nephews were adorable, especially the youngest one. Kang Ja was amazing, I love love loved her. The Ahjumma/Ahjussi romance was amazing (Bbangoo!) and I (not so) secretly loved Billy (the second male lead) until he became a butt at the end. He was just so funny! His nightmares were seriously the best part of the show. It was definitely good, but still definitely an early work by the Hong Sisters. At least it didn't have a year gap like we were so worried about. I hate them year gaps.

87. Goong aka Princess Hours 궁 (2006) Korean
Yoon Eun Hye, Joo Ji Hyun, Kim Jung Hoon, Song Ji Hyo
Drama Rating: 4.5/10 Neck Score: C
This is a C for bad neck wear. I'm talking to you Cat in the Hat bow ties, lame collars, turtlenecks, and gay necklaces. Also amazingly bad hair. That should put it to C---. Also, I hate Yul, that bitca. Ok, as much as this show sucks, I had to watch it. It was like crack too. I think the parts that make it weirdly horrible is the fact that this is literally a modern sageuk, with the whole princess and palace crap. So she's an ordinary girl but somehow she is chosen to marry the crown prince. This leads to problems as he is still caught up on the other girl Hyo Rin (Ji Hyo) who turned him down, but now regrets her choice. Then there is Yul, who is the bitca of the piece. Seriously, he is the bitca while Hyo Rin is more like the other dude. She's the man and he is the conniving bitca. The crap that goes on in the palace is something that would only fly in Joseon times, seriously. The bitca Yul andher his bitca mom are completely cray cray. Everyone you started out liking at the beginning turns out to be lame and the people you didn't like at first turn out to be the only cool people. Seriously. When you first meet the prince you think he's a bratty jerk, but he turns out to be the only person you love, while Yul, who you think is a nice guy is really a bitca. You start out liking the king and thinking the queen is too harsh and then you're like "the king is a stupid jerk and the queen is the only smart person here!" Also it gets really draggy because it's 24 when it should only be 20 episodes (another thing that makes it like a sageuk). The ending is also like wut? But still, once you start watching you have to finish it, even if you are screaming about how much you hate Yul the whole second half. Also those little teddy bear ending scenes. At first I thought they were weird, but then they were some of the only things I loved. This show (head shake).

84. It Started with a Kiss 惡作劇之吻 (2006) Taiwanese
Joe Cheng, Ariel Lin, Jiro Wang
Drama Rating: 6/10 Neck Score: B
Oh the shows I watch for Aaron Yan. Yep, I watched this one for Aaron Yan who was in it for like 5 scenes and never got a close up. However, I did get to appreciate his band mate Jiro Wang, who was seriously the best part of this show... as the other guy. This is the Taiwanese version of Playful Kiss and way better than the Korean version (which was even based somewhat on this one). As much as I wasn't a super big fan of Joe Cheng, at least he can act. It was so obvious that he like her that I wondered why she never got that. He was always in her face teasing her though, which was weird because he was literally in her face, like get out of her bubble dude. Jiro Wang was so cute, and did a good job of being the silly other guy without being too over the top. The worst part was the ending. It was like "wut?" One of the Taiwanese dramas faults is sacrificing too much for the sake of humor, and the ending of this with the cross dressing wedding was literally too much. However, it was a lot closer to the manga, and I found Ariel to be a much more sympathetic and understandable main girl. I thought she was fun and not annoying. Much more realistic and not as annoying. Still the newest Japanese version is the best (Mischievous Kiss: Love in Tokyo) and this takes second place in the Mischievous Kiss drama versions.
